The cropping of Artichokes usually starts during the second year and plants remain productive for up to 4 years. It is recommended restrict the artichoke heads to 6 per plant in the first year of harvest. In the fourth year it is recommended to plant the suckers cultivated for the following year. Suckers are also known to produce higher quality plants. Artichoke is best sown indoors between March and May and then planted out into their permanent positions in late May or early June. Artichokes are known to love saltier soil and seaweed is said to be the best fertilizer for these plants. Slugs and snails love to feast on Artichokes so it is recommend to keep a close eye on them.
