This old Chinese Lantern heirloom variety producing fruits which should not be consumed. The plant is poisonous and eating is not advised. The Chinese lantern is loved by bees and will bring life in your garden. Chinese lantern is easily identifiable by the large, bright orange to red papery covering over its fruit, which resembles paper lanterns. it has a fascinating and long history of medical use in Asia and parts of Europe. Physalis alkekengi is extremely frost hardy to a shocking -20°C.
